Desiccant as with many Modified Atmosphere Packaging products are a mystery to those who use them. They are placed in with our moisture sensitive products with hopes that they will do there job, but somehow it always feels like a crap shoot.
How do I know it will work, how do I know I'm using the right amount of desiccant.
These are good questions with no simple answers. I almost always answer the same "that depends" (customers hate this by the way) but it is the truth.
It depends on what's in the package, the relative humidity of the air in the package and how airtight the package is.
Lets start with you package...IS IT AIRTIGHT? if you say no, not really, or kind of but it's not perfect. Desiccant is not your answer for long term storage. Airtight is essential in using desiccant for longterm storage. If your package is not airtight, air will continue to force its way in to the packages atmosphere and exhaust the desiccant in a very short period of time.
So it is airtight...GREAT... so then your on to the package size and desiccant requirent guidelines.
The following link takes you to a guideline is just that, a guideline but it is a good general rule of thumb. http://www.polylam.com/desiccant_requirements_for_flexible_(flat)_containers.htm
This is a great start, however we all know there will be questions...so feel free to post them here or call 800-836-9648.
Thanks,
Joe
